SEA BOUNDARY / IL LIMITE
An incisive portrait of life aboard a Sicilian fishing vessel, the film depicts the daily struggle of fishermen to earn a living in a harsh physical environment that brings out the social and economic tensions of modern society.
Manning the Priamo are Cola, the captain, Ahmed, the Tunisian first mate, two Italian engineers, and two Tunisian seamen. At sea for three weeks at a time, they fish off the coasts of Libya and Tunisia, sometimes outside the fishing limits and risking interception by the authorities.
An intimate account of remoteness: after a few days on shore, the men leave their homes and families for a month. Night and day the nets are cast every four hours; the work is demanding and poorly paid; the quarters are cramped and uncomfortable; conflicts and prejudices surface amidst the roar of the engines and the sea. Beyond the horizon lies Africa, where immigrants embark for Europe, leaving their homes and families behind in the hope of finding a better life.
La vita quotidiana dell’equipaggio di un peschereccio d’altura siciliano diventa specchio del presente e della crisi, che produce effetti sull’intera esistenza dei pescatori, confinati per lunghi mesi tra la stiva ed il ponte.
La Priamo sta rientrando a Mazara del Vallo e l’equipaggio si prepara a riabbracciare i familiari dopo tre settimane di pesca in alto mare tra Lampedusa, la Tunisia e la Libia. Sulla nave il capitano, il timoniere e il motorista sono italiani, mentre il capo-pesca e i due marinai sono tunisini. La storia parte da qui, dalla città che vanta la marineria più grande d’Italia nonchè una folta comunità tunisina insediatasi tra le vie decrepite del centro storico, chiamato ironicamente la “Casbah”.
Un racconto intimo e partecipe sulla lontananza: dopo pochi giorni a terra, gli uomini lasciano le loro famiglie e ripartono per un altro mese. La rete viene calata ogni 4 ore, giorno e notte, con buono o cattivo tempo, la convivenza a bordo è difficile, i dialoghi sono rari, coperti dal rumore del motore e degli argani. Attorno solo mare e gabbiani e i suggestivi orizzonti del Mediterraneo a un passo dall’Africa, dove il peschereccio incrocia i migranti diretti in Europa.
